Books in the Mail

Yesterday, I received three books in the mail for review, courtesy of Westminster/John Knox Press.

The first is Jon D. Levenson's The Hebrew Bible, the Old Testament, and Historical Criticism. I'm really looking forward to this book. Levenson always has something interesting to propose, and this book looks to be no different.

The second book is J. Benton White's Taking the Bible Seriously: Honest Differences about Biblical Interpretation. White, here, is attempting to explain the Fundamentalist position to "Modernists," while arguing that Modernists also, if not more so, take the Bible as serious. From what I've read so far, White and I are going to have serious disagreements, but that's what will make it so fun and thought-provoking to read.

Finally, a book I've been very interested to read is the volume by Iain Provan, V. Philips Long, and Tremper Longman III entitled, A Biblical History of Israel. Anyone who is familiar with these scholars will surely appreciate a History of Israel from a conservative, but scholarly, perspective. That doesn't mean I'm going to go light on it, but it does mean these men likely think more along the lines that I do. We'll have to see.

I'm hoping to have all three book reviews done within the month, so stay tuned.

  1. Sounds good. The recent collection 'Evangelical Faith and the Challenge of Historical Criticism' is also worth checking out. I reviewed it recently on my blog.

  2. I read that on your blog. Good review. I've been wanting to get that book as well, but would likely have the same issues you did with it.
